The session was held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 2 to 4 September 2026 , bringing together representatives from countries across the Asia-Pacific region to exchange views and explore ways to strengthen regional cooperation.
During the session, Mohammad Hamdanlou, Secretary of Iran’s Information Technology Executive Council, was unanimously elected Vice-Chair of the fifth session of the ESCAP Committee on Information and Communications Technology, Science, Technology and Innovation.
The session focused on key issues including digital transformation, digital connectivity, emerging technologies, and strengthening the technological capacities of countries across the Asia-Pacific region.
Iran Highlights Priorities for Regional Cooperation
The Iranian delegation, headed by Hamdanlou, actively participated in the discussions and presented the Islamic Republic of Iran’s perspectives and priorities in the areas of information and communications technology, digital transformation, and regional cooperation.
The statement of the Islamic Republic of Iran was also delivered under the agenda items of the session, highlighting Iran’s active engagement and technical expertise in regional cooperation on information and communications technology.
Iran Takes a Leadership Role in the APIS Working Group
As another key outcome of Iran’s participation, Arman Pishini, Director of the Bilateral Relations Department at the Office of International Affairs and Export Development of Iran’s Ministry of Information and Communications Technology, was elected Vice-Chair of the Working Group of the Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway (APIS) initiative.
APIS is one of ESCAP’s key regional mechanisms for advancing digital connectivity, narrowing the digital divide, and promoting digital transformation across the Asia-Pacific region.
The election of Iranian representatives to these leadership positions further demonstrates Iran’s capacity to contribute actively to regional policymaking and cooperation mechanisms in the field of information and communications technology.
Bilateral Meetings and Regional Consultations
On the sidelines of the session, the Iranian delegation held a series of bilateral meetings and diplomatic and technical consultations with regional and international officials.
Among the meetings were discussions with the Executive Secretary of ESCAP, Deputy Ministers of Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, and the Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Technology of the Philippines.
The meetings addressed opportunities for expanding bilateral and regional cooperation in information and communications technology, digital transformation, and emerging technologies.
The participants emphasized the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges, strengthening technological capacities, and capitalizing on emerging opportunities in technology and innovation.
The Iranian delegation also met with the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Thailand to coordinate diplomatic efforts and explore opportunities for technology diplomacy and the further development of Iran’s regional engagements.
Strengthening Iran’s Role in Regional Technology Cooperation
The fifth session of the ESCAP Committee on Information and Communications Technology, Science, Technology and Innovation provided a valuable platform for exchanging views among countries in the region, presenting Iran’s technological capacities, and expanding the country’s international engagement in the field of technology.
The election of Hamdanlou as Vice-Chair of the session and the appointment of an Iranian representative as Vice-Chair of the APIS Working Group were among the key outcomes of Iran’s participation.
These achievements are expected to contribute to strengthening Iran’s role in regional cooperation mechanisms and deepening future engagement with ESCAP and countries across the Asia-Pacific region.
